  • Spyker C8 Spyder Supercharger Project

VF Engineering in Anaheim designed and installed a supercharger system for the C8 Spyder SWB. #083 was the lucky recipient of the supercharger. We tested the car at Willow Springs on the track May 12 and final changes were made based on the data collected.

Final testing took place June 1 at Laguna Seca. The car was also tested extensively on some of California's finer back roads and the results were excellent.

The car has gained an additional 100 HP at the rear wheels, and the torque band is now broader, starting about 500 rpm lower than previously. The power is smoothly delivered and there are no driveability issues. The car handles the additional power very well under all conditions. It makes the car more driveable and responsive under performance conditions, for sure.

The car shrieks like a banshee when the accelerator pedal is depressed forcefully, then takes off like a scalded cat!

Here are a couple of videos that show some of the testing June 1. The second really captures the engine and exhaust notes.

Congrats OntheLam! Very Cool. You made one angry beast of your C8 !
Did you change the air intakes/radiator as well? Now you just need to get one of these 'supercharger' badges

                    Very cool.

What group do you run with at those tracks? I know Laguna Seca can be hard to get into.

                        Thanks, guys!

The air intake was modified internally to accomodate the new manifold, but it is otherwise the same diameter as the old, leading to the same aperture behind the passenger, high on the side.

The car now has three radiators at the front, where before it had two. So it goes (front to back): charge cooler, air conditioner, engine radiator.

I asked Vinny Russo about getting the supercharger badges, but he said they never made many and can't find any. Bummer! So I'll have to go with the stickers from VF Engineering and GIAC for now.

Angry beast? Hah! Precision instrument is more like it. The car could always keep up with (or even beat) the Ferraris and Lambos in the corners, but would get left behind on the straights. Now that is "not a problem."

But seriously, if driven with restraint, the character of the car is unchanged. You don't hear the supercharger at low revs, or when the accelerator pedal is depressed gently. Only when you "get on it" do you hear the supercharger whine, and then it is a very welcome sound!

                          Hi Guys,

#083 has been a solid performer. What a great car on the track, lap after lap. The suspension and rest of the car are setup so well from the Spyker factory that adding the supercharger seemed a natural progression for the C8. Typically we find that adding 100whp and 90wtq (120 horsepower at the flywheel) changes the character of a car whereby the engine outperforms the chassis. However starting with a stock C8 that ratio is the opposite. The supercharger brings this to an equilibrium.

                          Keep the pictures coming!

... I am quite sure that new "turbine" sound of the supercharger is addictive!
