  • LMS round 5 - Silverstone 1000 kms. 14 september

Sorry for being late but I just returned from my holiday in France, I had a very nice time and was very reluctant to go home again...

During my holiday I visited a Porsche dealer. I was very surprised to see this prize and took a photograph. Let's hope in the not so far future we can make such a picture in Zeewolde!

Note that Tom Coronel is, after being away from quite some time, again at the wheel of a Spyker racecar. He will stand in for Peter Dumbreck. It will be the first time that he will try the new Laviolette GT2R!

          Preview GT2 Class

Virgo Motorsport and Team Felbermayr-Proton will be fighting for the GT2 title at Silverstone. Current championship leader Rob Bell will be without joint-leader Gianmaria Bruni this time. The Italian will be racing in the FIA GT Championship instead and will be replaced at Virgo by highly experienced Brazilian Jaime Melo. This automatically means that in the event Virgo Motorsport claims the LM GT2 title, only Rob Bell will be crowned the GT2 Drivers champion. If Alex Davison and Marc Lieb want to take the title they need at least four points more than Bell, something that did not happen yet this season.

At Silverstone 13 GT2 cars will take to the track. At SNORAS Spyker Squadron Peter Dumbreck is unavailable, his place will be taken by Tom Coronel. The best news in the class is the arrival (finally!) of the James Watt Automotive Aston Martin Vantage GT2. Alan van der Merwe, Tim Sugden and Michael Outzen are set to drive the car. With Markus Palttala racing in the FIA GT as well the #95 JWA Porsche will have a new crew. Car owner Paul Daniels will be joined by Peter Bamford and Matt Griffin. The final newcomer in GT2 is Julien Gilbert, competing in the #98 JMB Ferrari.

During the weekend there will also be news about the new ACO regulations while announcements from teams regarding the 2009 season are also expected.

                  Snoras Spyker Squadron Silverstone Preview

Fri 12 Sep 2008 SNORAS SPYKER SQUADRON Silverstone Preview

Silverstone, 12 September 2008 - This weekend the 50-car strong Le Mans Series Prototype and GT field will come in action for the last time this year. After earlier races at the historic tracks of Spa, Monza, Barcelona and the Nürburgring, this Sunday’s 1000 km of Silverstone is also Spyker Squadron’s last race of the season.

After an hard-fought fifth place for the #85 SNORAS Spyker C8 Laviolette GT2R in the Nürburgring 1000 km, this weekend both cars will again aim for a top-5 position. The #94 Speedy Racing Team car will be again driven by Benjamin Leuenberger and Andrea Chiesa. Peter Dumbreck has obligations in the Japanese GT Championship this weekend and Spyker Squadron regulars Alexei Vasiliev and Ralf Kelleners will be joined by dutchman Tom Coronel.

“A lot has changed since I last drove the car in 2006 at Donnigton” said Tom before the first free practice session on Friday. “I was involved in the early stages of the development of the Spyker race cars so it is great to be back with the team. It is really unique to drive as a Dutchman in a Dutch race car”.

Both cars passed the technical and administrative checks in yesterday’s scrutinizing and are ready for the two one hour free practice sessions today. The team brought a new spec rear wing for the UK Le Mans Series round.

Peter van Erp, managing director Spyker Squadron: “It is great to be back in the United Kingdom. I always admire their race culture and we had good results here last year - the cars finished third and fourth. If we can find a good setup I hope that we can replicate last year’s success. It will be the first time that we will use the Michelin tires at Silverstone and I expect they will perform a little better than at the Nürburgring; the grip level here is much higher. Our key challenge today is to find the right setup for Silverstone’s high speed corners, a lot of time can be won there”.

The 1000 km or six hour race will start this weekend at 11:20.

                      First Free Practice report

With the absence of Peter Dumbreck in the #85 driver squad, Ralf Kelleners was likeley to be promoted to Squadron Leader. Indeed it was Ralf that started behind the wheel in the beginning of the session. He took quite some time, getting a comfortable set-up on this car. A lot of short stints trying different settings to get it right. After about 45 minutes in the one hour session he was able to set this car's fastest lap of the session: 1:53,634

In the last 15 minutes of the session it was Tom Coronel who did his first laps in a Spyker for almost 2 years. Well what can I say... He certainly did not forget how to be quick in a Spyker: 1:54,947 Excellent stuff!

Alexei Vasiliev did not take part in this session yet, I suspect he will get some time in the car in the second and third free practice sessions.

In the #94 Spyker things really got of to a good start. In previous races we saw them struggling with the set-up, so it seemed. They were normally not on the pace of the #85 car with quite some margin but now they were in fact the fastest Spyker.

Both drivers of this car pretty close to one another, Leuenberger being quickest with 1:53,258 opposed to Chiesa's 1:54,656, as is usually the case and that could be the key to a good finishing position in the race come sunday!

                          Second Free Practice report

In an action packed second free practice, both Spykers did really well!

In the #85 Tom Coronel started off in this session which was hampered by heavy rainfall. With only 15 minutes of experience in this Spyker from the first session, Tom put a blistering 2:18,974 in, putting the Spyker first in class, first time out!

Than because of the heavy rainfall, the session was red flagged a couple of times for several cars spinning off the very wet track...

Fortunately the Spyker drivers did get their cars on the black stuff. Andrea Chiesa did a couple of very fast laps at his turn, his fastest being: 2:20,886 putting the #94 Spyker in 3rd position by than. Meanwhile Alexei Vasiliev got his anticipated first laps of the weekend in.

After 40 minutes in the one hour session the rain started to ease off a bit, and finally Tom's time was bettered, but we still had Spykers in 2nd and 3rd positions!

Than after 50 minutes the rain stopped and although the track was still wet, by the end of the session there was slowly becoming a dry line and times went down.

Alexei really did his utmost best to defend the second position in class by setting really competitive laptimes, even bettering the fastest laptime of the #85 Spyker set by Tom. Unfortunately Alexei's 2:16,574 was not quite good enough to maintain position but he still did a great job hanging in there in 6th position. It's not easy when you have to do your first laps of the race weekend in the heavy rain, well done Alexei!

In the #94 car Benjamin Leuenberger took over from Andrea and was able to better the fastest laptime from this Spyker. With his very competitive 2:14,589 he was 5th fastest in the end.

So with rain being the great equalizer we have Spykers in 5th and 6th position, the #94 again being the quicker of the two. It's very encouriging that the #94 is only slightly of 3rd place in this session. 6th position for the #85 is also a great achievement giving the fact that Ralf Kelleners did not participate in this session. Expect him to be back in the car in the third free practice session!
