    2007 Spyder GT2R - 2008 Laviolette GT2R

Because Spyker Squadron raced on Monza last year as well it might be interesting to compare laptimes that were accomplished last year.

I know it's very hard to compare laptimes on different occasions but I am also very anxious to see if the new Laviolette GT2R will be faster than last year's Spyder GT2R:

    Free practice 2007:
    Spyker Squadron #85 - 1:52.661
    Seedy Racing Team #94 - 1:53.576

    Qualifying 2007:
    Spyker Squadron #85 - 1:52.730
    Seedy Racing Team #94 - 1:53.508

    Warm-up 2007:
    Spyker Squadron #85 - 1:52.860
    Seedy Racing Team #94 - 1:53.954

    Fastest race lap 2007:
    Spyker Squadron #85 - 1:53.715
    Seedy Racing Team #94 - 1:54.119

    Race result 2007:
    Spyker Squadron #85 - D.N.F.
Seedy Racing Team #94 - 7th in class

      Free Practice

Fri 25 Apr 2008 SNORAS Spyker Squadron Monza free practice

SNORAS Spyker Squadron successfully completed two one-hour free practice sessions in preparation to the 1000 km of Monza race this weekend. With clear skies and mild temperatures, conditions on the historical track of Monza were excellent today. Both cars ran without any problems and valuable track time was used to work on the setup of the cars. Peter van Erp, managing director Spyker Squadron: “The first two cars in the GT2 class are quick but we are only one second behind the number three in class. Given the high speed nature of the track I am quite happy with our results so far. It is quite difficult for the Porsche’s and Ferrari’s to take over from our slipstream so our top speed if fine”.The team will continue to work on the setup Saturday morning. Later in the afternoon a twenty-minute GT qualifying session for Sunday’s race is scheduled. Today’s drivers in car number 85, Alexei Vasiliev and Ralf Kelleners, will be joined by Scotsman Peter Dumbreck tomorrow. With the permission of the Race Director he arrived after today’s sessions due to test obligations for the Japanese Super GT championship.

        Third Free Practice Session

Here are some quick notes from the third free practice session:

Peter Dumbreck started in the #85 car as he needed some time in the car because he missed the first and second free practice session due to testing in Japan...

Peter did a couple of short stints of only one timed lap, after every stint some changes were made and he was able to improve his time in every stint. His fastest laptime being: 1:52.972

In the #94 car, Andrea Chiesa started the session. He also did a couple of quick stints. This might indicate that the Squadron wanted to try some different settings after their experience from the first two free practice sessions. Andrea improved, and posted a fastest lap of: 1:52.521

Next up in the #85 car was Alexei Vasiliev, as far as i can tell he only did one timed lap but it was quite a good one: 1:53.904. That's not far off the pace compared to both Peter Dumbreck and Andrea Chiesa. Just one and a half second where as in Barcelona it was consistently between 4 and 5 seconds.

The final time of the session was reserved for Ralf kelleners in the #85 car and Benjamin Leuenberger in the #94 car. They both were able to improve on the previous best times set for their car by quite a big margin. Maybe the Squadron found something to improve on, or the track just got faster. Or maybe as these drivers are likely to do the qualifying, the cars were fully set to their preferences, after all no other drivers are driving before the qualifying session. Quickest of the Spyker drivers turned out to be Ralf: 1:51.480 over a second faster than the Squadron had managed on the same circuit last year with the Spyder GT2R. In the #94 car Benjamin reached: 1:51.749, not far behind.

These results meant 8th in class for the #85 car (2,5 sec. behind the class leader) and 9th in class for the #94 car (out of 12 competitors).

          Qualifying

Here are some quick notes from the qualifying session:

In the #85 car, Ralf Kelleners was able to better his free practice time: 1:51.217. It left him with 9th position in class 2,2 sec. behind the class leader, the Ferrari 430GT of Virgo Motorsport.

If we compare that to last year: 1:52.730, 11th in class (out of 19), 2,4 sec. behind the class leading IMSA Performance Porsche, we can see some improvement. The Laviolette GT2R went 1,5 sec. quicker over the circuit than last year's Spyder GT2R and also closed the gap to the class leader by 0,2 sec. So well done .

In the sister car #94, Benjamin Leuenberger also tried to improve on his best time set in free practice, but unfortunately he didn't succeed: 1:52.330, almost 0,6 sec. slower than in the previous session. It means that #94 will have to start 11th on the grid in class. It is always difficult to reach full potential in qualifying. The session only lasts 20 minutes so you have to be on the ball straight away or you might lose one of the few opportunities you get on the busy track.
But the race is very long and both Benjamin and Andrea are good drivers so they will definitely work their way up the GT2 field!

Sat 26 Apr 2008 SNORAS Spyker Squadron Monza qualifying

The GT2 team of Dutch luxury car manufacturer Spyker Cars, SNORAS Spyker Squadron, qualified in 9th and 11th position for tomorrow’s Le Mans Series Monza round. The 1000km race, the second round in a series of five, will start this Sunday at 12:50 and can be seen live on MotorsTV and Eurosport.

Conditions were excellent for qualifying this afternoon with a temperature in the mid-twenties, a light breeze and clear skies. Immediately after green light was given for the 20 minute GT qualifying session both Spyker’s left the pitlane to set their quickest time. The lap times of the 12 GT2 cars were much closer than in the free practice sessions but both drivers managed to find some time and got closer to the leading car.

It was Swiss Benjamin Leuenberger, in his first qualifying session ever with the Spyker C8 Laviolette, to set the 11th time in the #94 Speedy Racing Team car. “Qualifying did not go very well” said Benjamin afterwards. “I asked to change the front splitter to win a bit more top speed but unfortunately it did not work out as planned. According to the data we have just reviewed the engine was also a bit down on performance but nevertheless I am looking forward to tomorrow’s race. If we can finish without any problems we should be able to run in a top-5 position”.

The other car, the #85, was qualified by German Ralf Kelleners. Ralf: “Everything worked out well for us today. Unfortunately we will start from a ninth position but I am happy with the distance between us and the pole car. We are much closer to the competition than in Barcelona and we have less track issues with the car then in Spain. I enjoyed driving the C8 Laviolette there but here in Italy I like it even better: the car is well balanced, we have more grip and you can really squeeze the last bit out of it and drive it more aggressively. I think from a driver’s perspective the race will be a lot more fun as we are able to fight for positions instead of having to drive strategically, keep our act together and stay out of trouble as we did in the 1000 km of Catalunya”.

Peter van Erp, managing director Spyker Squadron: “So far we have been able to improve our times in all sessions. Nevertheless it is a bit disappointing to see that it is not enough to gain grid positions. I am very pleased with the performance of Andrea Chiesa and Benjamin Leuenberger but also Alexei is doing an excellent job in the other car. If in tomorrow’s race our strategy and pitstops work out well and we can manage to stay out of trouble we will be able to advance into a top-5 position and claim a few valuable championship points”.

Immediately after qualifying the mechanics started to prepare the cars for the race; both will get a fresh race engine for tomorrow’s 1000 km race. Andrea Chiesa and Ralf Kelleners will start the race tomorrow.

                Bad news!!!

Already there has been drama in qualifying as two cars have been put to the back of the grid for having excessive cockpit temperatures. The rule is designed to protect the driver from overheating while driving and affects the second Corvette C6R, qualified by Sebastien Dumez, and the Spyker C8 Laviolette of Ralf Kelleners.
So the #85 SNORAS Spyker Squadron has to start from the back of the grid! That will make the race a bit more difficult...

                      Warm up

Here are some quick notes from the warm up session:

It was Peter Dumbreck who was in the driverseat of the Spyker #85 during the 20 minute warm-up session. A good chance to feel the new motor that was installed yesterday evening after qualifying. Unfortunately it did not go very well. Peter was only able to do 3 very slow laps...

In the sister car #94 it was Andrea Chiesa who took the wheel. Since Benjamin Leuenberger did the qualifying of this car, an excellent opportunity to feel the latest settings on the car. All went very well, nice amount of laps, consistant laptimes, and a fastest laptime of 1:54.124, bringing him 6th in class. Well done Andrea!

I know warm up sessions are not usually meant for fast laptimes but it is always nice to do well because it's the last session before the race and if you do well this clearly gives you a good feeling for the race.

I don't know what the problem is with the #85 car, but there is still a couple of hours to go before the start of the race, and we have seen that the Squadron crew is outstanding, so i am very confident that they are able to solve the problem!

                        Pre race update

Sun 27 Apr 2008 Spyker Squadron Monza pre-start update

After having received a penalty from the organization for high cockpit temperatures in yesterday’s qualifying session car number 85 will have to start from the back of the field. As per 2007 ACO regulations demand specific ambient temperatures for all closed cars, with or without air-conditioning systems installed.

Instead of starting from the back of the field team management have decided to start from the pit lane. This will give the team a strategic advantage as the car can start on warm tires and save two laps of fuel as it can skip the recognize and installation laps. By starting from the pit lane the car will not loose too much time as the field normally compresses in the first corner, the Rettifilo Chicane or Prima Variante.

The team calculated that, based on Peugeot’s lap times, the race will last 4 hours and 40 minutes excluding safety car periods and pit stops. Peter van Erp, managing director Spyker Squadron: “In the first Le Mans Series round in Barcelona we had to return to the pit for a splash and dash to finish the race. Although it is disappointing to not be on the grid for the start we might gain some advantage by starting from the pit lane later in the race”.

Let's hope they can get some advantage from starting out of the pit lane! To bad they didn't say anything about the problems in the warm up.
